Being stuckĀ on hold is one of the many levels of hell here on earth, but even worse is the terrible hold music that gets played while you’re waiting. You may often wonder why this music sounds just absolutely terrible, but there’s a good reason for it.

Phones are great at communicating voice signals that stay in one range and are easily broken up, but they are terrible at communicating music or sounds that have a variety of ranges. This all has to do with noise compression, a technology that helps phones communicate signals at a much faster pace. The short video below will explain the problem a little further.
