Understand how Skyscrapers are Stabilized – Demonstrated through LEGOs

Skyscrapers are works of modern engineering made possible by some interestingly engineered mechanisms. One of those mechanisms, called Tuned Mass Dampers, allow skyscrapers to remain steady in high-winds and seismic events.

These large devices work to offset the shaking and oscillation of these tall buildings to keep the deviation from plumb as minimal as possible. In order to understand how they work, the video below explains their function utilizing something you might be a little bit more familiar with: LEGOs.
