Operation Credible Sport: A Rocket Powered C-130

During the Iranian hostage crisis, the US military worked tirelessly overseas to figure out how to get a C-130 to land in a small strip of land needed to rescue the hostages. The plane needed the ability to keep a very short landing and takeoff path, which simply wasn’t possible in a C130’s traditional configuration.

Engineers had the crazy idea to strap rockets to the fixed wings of the craft that would assist in takeoff and landing. For months, pilots were able to successfully use the rockets to their intended purpose, but the project ultimately ended in failure due to an untimely crash. The video below details more about this top-secret mission in 1980.
