For all you lovers of the classic video game, Ms. Pac-Man, your match has just been made. Microsoft’s latest Artificially intelligent bots have been able to achieve the maximum score of 999,990 on Ms. Pac-Man, which has never been accomplished before in the history of the game. Rather than just one bot mastering the game, Microsoft placed a team of intelligent bots on the task, and it was just released that they have mastered how to play.

The AI system designed by Microsoft was developed as a Hybrid Reward Architecture (HRA) system, according to Science Alert. Essentially, this means that each intelligent bot set out to solve one problem at a time and develop algorithms. To finally beat the game, all of the bots were brought together and game logic was solved as a team of AI’s.
To clarify even further, the AI programs used learned through reinforcement. They each set out to play the game and learned which decisions were good and which were bad. While these programs essentially beat the game on their own, they were all initially programmed with the rules of Ms. Pac-Man. So, the programs knew theoretically how Ms. Pac-Man was played, but they didn’t know the best way to beat it, given the random movements of ghosts and placement of bonuses in the game.
The reason that Microsoft focused research on beating the game was in pursuit of developing artificially intelligent programs further to the point that they may be able to beat games or solve problems with very little initial input.
If you’re wondering just how high humans have gotten the score on Ms. Pac-Man, that record sits just shy of the AI’s score at 266,330.
