Compliant mechanisms are mechanical devices that transfer forces and motion through elasticity of the material, through bending.

This may seem like the perfect scenario for fatigue failure, but with the onset of advanced additive manufacturing and improved material sciences, engineers are starting to be able to create compliant mechanisms that don’t fatigue. When this functionality is possible, it often makes compliant mechanism designs better than their mechanically jointed counterparts.
